ACTION NEEDED: Help Cancel Cruel Bull Run!

Written by Laura Thursday, 16 May 2013 20:52

Richmond Friends of Animals needs your help with an important issue in our area. Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg plans to host in August a bull run that's traveling across the country, and we need to show them that Richmond will not accept this cruel event!
Animals used in this event will suffer the turmoil of unnecessary transport to the event, including needless confinement and discomfort as they are moved to the park. Further, the bulls will be unceremoniously dumped into a scenario which will undoubtedly create fear, dismay and bewilderment with hundreds or thousands of people, foreign and loud noises, strange scents and surfaces under their hooves. During the actual run itself, the bulls are exposed to injury from participants who may choose to touch them or simply from running into each other, runners or barriers set up to contain them. The overall scenario for the bulls is one that begins with confusion, turns into chaos and fear and may well lead to injury.
We have written to the park with no response, and now we're ramping up our efforts with this petition. Please take just a moment to click this link and sign! Let's do our best to get this event canceled, and plan to protest the event itself if not! Please share this link with your friends and family, too!

Thanks to all who came out to protest the circus last night! We had 35+ protestors, several people sharing facts on the bullhorn with circus-goers, we handed out 2 boxes of literature, and even the kids loved our tiger in a cage. We made it into the Richmond Times-Dispatch too! Thanks again for everyone's commitment to the animals!

Billie Jean Fox, who said she worries about the treatment of circus animals, encountered about 40 members of the Richmond Friends of Animals on Wednesday along Seventh Street, where they were protesting the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus. Fox was on her way to see the circus at the Richmond Coliseum.

We need your help to continue to push this bill through to stop fox penning in Virginia! Here is an update from the Humane Society:

This Tuesday morning Senate Bill 1280 will be heard by the House Natural Resources Subcommittee in at 7:30a.m. in the Capitol building (see below).  Whether you’ve got one minute or less than an hour to spend Tuesday morning you can continue to help us make history for animals – Here’s how:

Commitment – Action:

  • 5 minutescontact your Delegate right now and ask that he/she support SB1280 to end cruel fox pens in VA.
    • Find your Delegate: (click on the long thin blue box at the very top, “Click for Bill Tracking, Meetings, Who’s My Legislator?” and type in your address.)
    • Call you Delegate and share, “Hi my name is _________; I am a constituent and I want Delegate ________ to vote yes on SB1280 to end cruel staged competitions in fox pens.”
    • Write or email your Delegate with the same message.  Easy email form in our action alert.

  • Less than an hour – attend the House Agriculture Natural Resources Subcommittee meeting on Tuesday (2/12) morning at 7:30am in the Capitol building, House Room 3.
    • The future of this bill rests in the hands of seven Delegates.  If just four Delegates vote against us, the bill will die.  Your attendance will have a HUGE impact on whether or not this bill passes on Tuesday morning.  Please join us and tell those you know in the Richmond area how important this meeting is – hopefully they can come too!
    • For directions and parking click here and for a map of the capitol grounds click here.

For the future – should our 2013 legislative efforts end Tuesday morning we will immediately begin advocacy through the regulatory review process with the Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries in March.  This state agency has the regulator power to engage in rule-making on fox pens regardless of legislative direction. We will send you updates as major milestones approach and how to get involved.

Virginia’s fox and coyote penning bill (S.B. 1280, which aims to ban new penning operations), passed through the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources this morning by one vote. The bill will now go in front of the full senate on MONDAY. We need everyone of you who live in Virginia to call your state senators  and urge them to support S.B. 1280. Please ask friends and family members who live in VA to do the same! These calls really need to happen today or first thing Monday morning.  Foxes and coyotes used in this blood sport are trapped and ultimately torn to pieces by several to hundreds of dogs and people pay for this- one of the arguments for it is that people's income relies on this!  Please state that you want your senator to vote for bill SB 1280 to end this cruel practice and that you are a voting resident of their district.  Please visit this website to type in your address and find your reps and you can send a message in addition to calling to make sure they get the point!
